Mike Reader MP has said they will do all they can to improve education, skills and ac-
cess to good quality job opportunities in Northampton South.
Mike Reader MP has attended an event in the House of Commons to support the new
government’s mission to break down the barriers to opportunity in Northampton South.
The event in the House of Commons was hosted by the Purpose Coalition, Britain’s biggest campaign to break
down the barriers to opportunity. The Coalition is made up of over 800 organisations, including businesses, uni-
versities, local colleges, NHS Trusts and more, and covers 8 million people.
The Purpose Coalition works with these organisations to measure and track their social impact and provide
recommendations for improvement, provide paid Living Wage work experience opportunities to young people,
and encourage all organisations to deliver fairly for their customers, colleauges and local communities.
The Purpose Coalition has conducted analysis of every Parliamentary constituency in the UK, and found that in
Northampton South, the greatest barrier to opportunity is access to good quality and affordable housing. This is
one of the seven key barriers to opportunity across the UK, and areas of focus for the Purpose Coalition.
As one of their five Missions, breaking down barriers will be a crucial area of focus for the new government, with
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson already announcing Skills England, a mission to transform opportunities
and drive growth across the UK.
Mike Reader MP, Labour MP for Northampton South said
“As one of Labour’s key Missions, I will do everything I can as Northampton South’s Member of Parliament to
break down the barriers to opportunity locally. By bringing together employers, local educational institutions
and government, we can give our young people access to better opportunities so they can fulfil their potential.
It was great to support the work of the Purpose Coalition, and I look forward to working with them as our local
Member of Parliament to break down barriers to opportunity across Northampton South.
Nick Forbes CBE, who Co-Chairs the Purpose Coalition said
“It was great to welcome Mike to the first Purpose Coalition event since the General Election, and to see their
passion to break down the barriers to opportunity in Northampton South.
As Britain’s biggest campaign to break down barriers, I look forward to working with Mike over the coming years
to provide high quality, well paid opportunities to people across Northampton South in the years to come.”
